How were the colours controlled?
What/who are the colours associated with? How are they used in the film?
BLUE
Blue reminds me of things like depression, calm/cool.
Blue is often used in battle and at night.
I'm unsure how Del Toro actually controls the colours, but I think some of it is natural and others use filters.
Blue mainly has an association with the Fascists, usually when they are fighting.
I noticed that the Faun's eyes are a pale blue, but it isn't overt, they could be white. The Fascist soldiers and officers also wear blue, excluding the captain.
At the end of the film I noticed that the Socialists now had blue associated with them instead of the Fascists. Perhaps blue is associated with the force in power rather then the Fascists specifically?
GREEN
Green reminds me of nature primarily. It gives a calm feeling like blue, but it's slightly different.
Green seems to be related to magical things, so the Labyrinth, the fairy's, Ofelia, the forest and the Toad.
Ofelia is the only one with green as a common theme, as for locations, the labyrinth is filled with moss and vines.
Green doesn't seem to be used very much compared to gold and blue, but it might be that Del Toro Just wants it to be all about Ofelia.
GOLD
Gold reminds me of "Holy" purity (As in angelic light). But in the right conditions gold gives a feeling of warmth, often when it's the light from a fire or lamp.
Gold is usually seen around fires. I did see it used for the key, dagger, toad and the underground kingdom, so perhaps it has an association with magic like green does. Gold is also the colour used for the toad's den under the tree.
Gold has only be shown in two periods in the film, the Toad's den and the Underground Kingdom, which had gold and red used for absolutely everything. The walls were made of gold, the pedestal thrones were made of gold, Ofelia's clothes were made of gold and the air itself had a gold hue.
