Fairy tales
THE STORY OF MOANNA
In the underground kingdom the princess Moanna evaded her keepers so she could escape to the surface, the sunlight blinded her and destroyed her memory. After a time she slowly died of disease and the cold. Her father, the king, knew that one day her soul would return, so he vowed to wait for her until her dying breath.
The teacher says its reminiscent of The Little Mermaid, but I haven't seen the film for over a decade so I can't corroborate that.
THE MOUNTAIN FLOWER
There was a flower on the top of a mountain, it would give the person that plucked it immortality however it was surrounded by poisonous thorns that would kill whoever touched them. Men would talk about there fear of death and pain but would never talk about the promise of immortality. The flower was forgotten and lost at the top of the mountain for the rest of time.
I don't think any fairy tale specifically influences this story, but the theme of roses and immortality is certainly one you can find through many.
THE FAUN
He has had many names that only the mountains and the tree's can pronounce. He is the mountain the forest and the earth. He is the Faun. Ofelia's father sent him to guard the portal until Ofelia's return, he was also tasked with making sure her immortal essence was intact by giving her three trials that needed to be completed before the moon is full.
I don't think he was inspired by a 'Modern' fairy tale, but was inspired by the Roman mythology of the Pan and his faun's.
THE FIG TREE
When the forest was young and filled with magic a giant fig tree lived, protecting everything under it's shade, but one day a toad moved under the fig tree and stopped it from flourishing, eventually the tree became withered and dry, no longer able to protect the forest and it's creatures. To this day the Fig tree still lives, waiting for someone to kill the frog and let it flourish again.
The tree of life likely inspired the creation of the fig tree, other things like the toad being some malignant evil are also common through fairy tales.
THE UNDERGROUND KINGDOM
Ofelia ends up having her own blood spilled rather then her brothers, as a result she finishes the final task and goes back to the underground kingdom where she is reunited with her long lost family and presumably she lives "Happily ever after".
The ending is reminiscent of pretty much every fairy tale there is, the princess gets reunited with her family and they live happily ever after.
